Professor Samaila Usman Dakyes
The department of industrial design awards 2 degrees: the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Science. While the Bachelor of Arts trains designers in Ceramics, Graphics and Textiles; the Bachelor of Science degree trains students who are specializing in Glass Design and Technology. As clearly spelt out in the handbook, we have an emphasis on studio work. We however, inculcate enough theory on the studio areas to sustain our research base. It will be on interest to readers to be informed that the department has reinstated the Diploma and Certificate programmes, which were discontinued some time ago. We believe that the Diploma and the Certificate courses will give opportunities to practicing designers who are prepared to improve on their skills in the studio areas. Those determined to obtain their degrees can do so by acquiring their ‘O’ Level equivalent to meet the entry requirements. However, information on Diploma and Certificate courses can be obtained in the Department. As a pioneer department and leader in Industrial design in the history of higher education in Nigeria, we call on all stakeholders to come on board to ensure the development of the vast resources endowed to this great country.
